Vulnerability Assessment

Point-in-time vulnerability assessment

A snapshot scan of your estate to find known vulnerabilities — validated, prioritised and delivered with remediation guidance. The starting point for understanding exposure.

A vulnerability assessment is a point-in-time scan of your estate — servers, endpoints, network, cloud and applications — to find known vulnerabilities. Passeca runs authenticated scanning, validates and deduplicates findings, prioritises by CVSS and exploitability, and delivers a remediation-ordered report. It is the fastest way to see what is exposed right now.

Definition

What is a vulnerability assessment?

A breadth-first, automated-and-validated snapshot of known weaknesses across an estate. It is the entry-level offensive-security activity.

A vulnerability assessment enumerates the known vulnerabilities present in your infrastructure and applications — missing patches, misconfigurations, weak ciphers and default credentials — using authenticated scanning. Raw scanner output is noisy, so each assessment includes validation and de-duplication: we remove false positives, group related findings, and rank the result by CVSS combined with real exploitability.

The output is a remediation-ordered report: a prioritised backlog your IT and operations teams can work down. It does not include exploitation — that is what penetration testing adds. If you need to know not just what is vulnerable but whether an attacker can actually use it, pair the assessment with a pentest.

The difference

Vulnerability assessment vs vulnerability management vs penetration testing

Three related but distinct activities. Most organisations need all three at different cadences.

What's included

What does a Passeca assessment include?

Authenticated scanning across servers, endpoints and network devices
External perimeter scan of internet-facing assets
Cloud configuration and service exposure review
Application-layer scanning where in scope
Validation and de-duplication to remove false positives
CVSS and exploitability prioritisation
Remediation guidance per finding
An executive summary plus a technical finding register
Timeline & cost

How long does an assessment take, and what does it cost?

Driven by estate size and whether scanning is authenticated. Smaller and faster than a pentest of the same estate.

Estate sizeTypical durationPrice band
Small (<100 assets)2–3 daysPrice on request
Medium (100–500 assets)~1 weekPrice on request
Large (500+ assets)1–2 weeksPrice on request
When to choose it

When is an assessment the right choice?

  • You have no current visibility. An assessment is the fastest baseline of what is exposed.
  • A compliance deadline needs scanning. PCI DSS quarterly scanning, ISO 27001 and SOC 2 monitoring evidence.
  • You need a remediation backlog. A prioritised list your IT team can work down.
  • Before a pentest. Fix the easy noise first so the pentest concentrates on what matters.
FAQ

Vulnerability assessment, answered

How it differs from pentest and continuous VM, cadence and compliance.

What is a vulnerability assessment?
A vulnerability assessment is a point-in-time scan of your estate — servers, endpoints, network devices, cloud and applications — to identify known vulnerabilities. Findings are validated, prioritised and delivered with remediation guidance. It tells you what is exposed right now, without the exploitation depth of a full penetration test.
How is a vulnerability assessment different from penetration testing?
A vulnerability assessment enumerates known weaknesses across the estate automatically and prioritises them; it does not exploit them or chain them into attack paths. Penetration testing is manual, exploits the weaknesses it finds, and proves business impact. Assessment gives you breadth and a remediation backlog; pentest gives you depth and a demonstrated attack path.
How is a vulnerability assessment different from vulnerability management?
An assessment is point-in-time — a snapshot on a given date. Vulnerability management is continuous: scanning on a recurring schedule, tracking remediation over time, trending exposure, and integrating with ticketing and risk registers. A one-off assessment is a check; vulnerability management is a programme.
How often should a vulnerability assessment be run?
At least quarterly for most estates, and after significant changes (new infrastructure, mergers, major deployments). Compliance regimes such as PCI DSS require quarterly external scans. For environments that change frequently, continuous vulnerability management replaces the point-in-time cadence.
Does a vulnerability assessment satisfy PCI DSS?
PCI DSS requires quarterly external vulnerability scans by a PCI-approved ASV, plus internal scanning at least quarterly and after significant changes. A vulnerability assessment can help meet PCI DSS internal scanning requirements if it follows the applicable testing, coverage and remediation criteria; for external validation you need ASV scans, which Passeca arranges. Penetration testing (Requirement 11.4) is a separate, additional requirement.
Does a vulnerability assessment include exploitation?
No. A vulnerability assessment identifies and prioritises known weaknesses but does not exploit them. If you need to know whether a vulnerability is actually exploitable in your environment and the business impact of exploitation, pair the assessment with a penetration test.
